Alum Tommy Schmitz breaks 4:00 Mile

Marquette track and field / cross country alum Tommy Schmitz broke the 4:00 mile barrier this weekend at a meet at the University of California.

Find a link to the GoMarquette.com story here.

Here is a video of the race from RunnerSpace.com. Tommy is in and out of the picture throughout much of the race, starting toward the back and running much of the race in the 3rd or 4th position. There are also several rabbits that dropout throughout.

Congratulations to Tommy on breaking 4, something all milers would love to do, but few have done. For those that don't know, Tommy really came on his 5th year of college, finishing 2nd at the Big East indoor in the 1000 meters and then breaking the school record in the 1500 meters with a 3:45, about a 4:02 equivalent. Since graduating, Tommy has really focused on his running, training much of the time in California. Looking at his online running log has showed how dedicated he has become with his running and the results are paying off. Good luck Tommy.
