Hoosier Hills

The MU men's and women's track and field teams competed at the Hoosier Hills Invitational hosted by Indiana University this past Friday February 12th. The meet served as a tune-up for conference for a number of student-athletes and as a last chance to qualify for several others. Two men took advantage of the situation as Junior Joe Kohut and Freshman Ron Vick (pictured to the left) each hit BIG EAST qualifying marks. Vick's jump of 14-5.25 was a 7 inch PR and placed him #8 on the all-time list.

Blast from the Past

With BIG EAST Indoor approaching this weekend I thought it would be cool to show a clip from the 1991 Midwestern Collegiate Conference indoor meet. Jeff Lancaster and Glen Gardener competing in the 800m. This summer I hope to digitize more footage from archives. Keep an eye out.

Meyo Invitational

The Marquette men's and women's track & field teams competed at the very competitive Meyo Invitational hosted by Notre Dame on Friday and Saturday February 5-6, 2010. The meet was a big success as we had numerous PRs and placed several new student-athletes onto the all-time lists.

On the women's side senior Sarah Verdoliva ran a PR and the #3 time in school history in the 1000m with a 2:53.53. Junior Olivia Johnson followed with a 2:54.42 PR that makes her #5 all-time and junior Kristin Pelzel's 2:58.52 PR makes her #9 all-time. Olivia Johnson followed up her strong 1k on Friday night with a 4:58.40 mile on Saturday that makes her #10 in the MU record book. Senior Erynn James was the team highest individual placer, taking 3rd in the high jump with a very solid jump of 5-8.75.

One the men's side the 5000m was the story of the meet. Junior Nick Szczech and sophomore Blake Johnson each ran great races. Szczech's PR time of 14:25.10 makes him #3 in school history while Johnson's time of 14:26.75 in his first time racing the 5k makes him #4 all-time. junior Brice Cleland's PR 14:46.28 makes him #9 on the all-time list. In the mile, sophomore Jack Hackett continued to shave time off his mile PR with a 4:08.97. In the 1000m freshman Jack Senefeld broke the MU Freshman record with at time of 2:28.98. That time is good enough for #7 on the all-time list.

Better Late Than Never - MU vs UWM

Sorry for the scarcity of updates, I will try to be better about keeping up each week. Anyway, here is the meet coverage and a few pictures from the Marquette vs. UW-Milwaukee Dual meet held back on Saturday January 23rd. There were may alumni and parents in attendance. We thank you for your support!

The women's meet didn't go quite as planned as the Panthers won 57-80. Despite the team loss, Erynn James set a new indoor school record in the high jump with a height of 5-10 which also provisionally qualifies her for the NCAA Indoor Championship.

The men's meet came right down to the last event as the team score was tied going into the 4x4. The MU foursome of Randey Fisher, Jay Emmer, Michael O'Brien and Kyle Winter edged out the Eastsiders for the victory.

Though this meet was mostly about the team score, there were several individual highlights. Check them out...

Onto the pictures...

Senior Erynn James set a new school record in winning the High Jump with a leap of 5-10 (1.78m). That mark is an NCAA provisional qualifying mark.

Senior Jeff Kluge dominated the throwing events, winning both the shot put and weight throw. Jeff set a PR in the weight throw by just over a meter with a heave of 61-8.5 (18.81m). That throw moves him closer to school record holder Dan Fax's top mark of 62-11.5 (19.19m).

Senior Jayne Grebinski won the mile with a BIG EAST qualifying time of 5:02.21

Senior Rachel Thiel captured a title in the shot put with a distance of 46-5.5 (14.16m) and finished 2nd in the weight throw.

Sophomore James Muehleman took 2nd in the Triple Jump; reaching a personal best and his first BIG EAST qualifying mark with a distance of 44-6.75 (13.58m).

Junior Alyssa Davis, in her first competition back after injury, reached a BIG EAST qualifying mark of 37-8.5 (11.49m) in the Triple Jump.

Junior Jon Kusowski tied his PR, improved his BIG EAST qualifying mark, and placed second in the weight throw with a throw of 56-6 (17.77m).

The MU men dominated the mile taking the top 6 overall places. Sophomore Blake Johnson (hip #2 in the photo) lead the way with a time of 4:16.51.
Senior Shawn McLarney won the Long Jump with a BIG EAST qualifying mark of 22-8.5 (6.92m)
In the meet's final event - the 4x400m Relay - the MU foursome of senior Randey Fisher, senior Jay Emmer (pictured w/ baton), senior Michael O'Brien (foreground), and freshman Kyle Winter battled the team from UWM as the race lead was exchanged several times before Kyle was able to slingshot off the final turn and pass the UWM runner in the final 20m for the win.
