The Marquette men's and women's track and field teams competed at the BIG EAST Indoor track and field championships last weekend at The Armory in New York City. Though the team did not pace as well as hoped, we had several great performances including a new school record in the 800m by Sarah Verdoliva.
The Armory is the home to the USA Track and Field Hall of Fame. We found this cool artifact, the team USA baton from the 1936 Olympic 400m Relay signed by former MU great Ralph Metcalfe, Jesse Owens, Foy Draper and Frank Wykoff.
Senior Sarah Veroliva broke her own school record int he 800m running 2:12.05 in the prelim to place 12th. Sarah came back to split 2:11.9 on the 800 leg of the DMR and also ran a 2:14.6 leg on the 4x800m Relay.
Junior Olivia Johnson ran a PR 4:53.71 in the prelim of the Mile to qualify for the final. That time makes her #5 on the all-time list.
Freshman Kyle Winter ran a PR 1:03.93 in the prelim of the 500m to qualify for the final. That mark is good for #2 on the all-time list.
Senior Rachel Thiel threw a PR 15.99m (52-5.5) to place 8th in the weight throw. That throw moves her up to #7 on the all-time list.
Senior Erynn James jumped 1.70m (5-7) to tie for 5th in the High Jump.
Junior Jon Kusowski threw a PR 17.78m (58-4) in the weight throw to pace 7th. That throw makes Jon #3 all-time.
Senior Jayne Grebinski lead off the Distance Medley Relay team that placed 5th with a time of 11:45.03. That time is #3 on the all-time list.
Junior Kristin Pelzel had a great meet in the relays. She ran Mile leg on the DMR in 4:58.8 and the 3rd leg on the 4x800m Relay in 2:15.1. Both splits are solid PRs over those distances.
Freshman Cheldon Brown jumped an indoor PR of 2.01m (6-7) to place 8th in the High Jump. That mark makes Cheldon #6 on the all-time list.
The MU men's and women's track and field teams competed at the Hoosier Hills Invitational hosted by Indiana University this past Friday February 12th. The meet served as a tune-up for conference for a number of student-athletes and as a last chance to qualify for several others. Two men took advantage of the situation as Junior Joe Kohut and Freshman Ron Vick (pictured to the left) each hit BIG EAST qualifying marks. Vick's jump of 14-5.25 was a 7 inch PR and placed him #8 on the all-time list.
